Arts & Crafts Furniture & Homes Help, Tips and Advice

"Picture, picture, on the wall..."

"Picture, picture, on the wall..."

If there is one frustration every Arts & Crafts collector shares in common, it is hanging artwork.

In those few seconds that elapse between holding a frame in place against a wall and pounding in the nail, something goes wrong. The frame ends up either a little too high, a little too low or off center.

And despite what you might say at the time, I guarantee you'll always notice it each time you walk into the room.

So, how can we be sure we'll be tapping the nail or hook into the right spot?

With your own Picture Hanger, which, following these simple instruction, you can make yourself in just a few minutes.

My simple Picture Hanger consists of a piece of wood approximately ¾" x 3" x 15". At the top is a handle large enough for me grip firmly and securely. At the opposite end is a wood screw, long enough that the point protrudes through the back and the head protrudes far enough on the front for it to hold the wire on the back of the frame.

The concept is just as simple. You hook the frame wire over the head of the screw, then gently lift the Picture Hanger and the frame up against the wall, taking care not to scratch the paint or wallpaper with the protruding point on the back.

"Picture, picture, on the wall..."

When the frame is in the location you desire, you simple apply pressure against the Picture Hanger, causing the point of the screw to leave a small indentation precisely where the nail or hook needs to be.

It may seem a little awkward at first, but you'll quickly get the hang of it (sorry about the pun).

Tip of the Week: If you draw an arrow at the top of your Picture Hanger in line with the screw at the bottom, you can also use it to match a measurement or pencil mark that insures your frame will be centered on your wall (use the magnifier to enlarge the details on either photograph).

Happy Hanging!
